As it stands right now, there are 17 candidates who have thrown their hat into the Republican ring in hopes of being the party choice for the upcoming Presidential Election. The field will almost certainly start to thin out over the next few months, but for now, let’s take a look at the candidates who have announced their intention to run for President:
Jeb Bush – The former Governor of Florida (1997-2007) will be looking to become the third member of the Bush family to take up residence in the White House. If anything, Jeb Bush may be even more conservative than his father and brother, but has stated that he is reform-minded.
Ben Carson – A former Director of Pediatric Surgery at John’s Hopkins, Carson does not have a lot of political experience, but he is highly respected.
Chris Christie – The current governor of New Jersey, and former United States Attorney for the same state. Christie was appointed to the latter position by both Bush presidents, and was greatly admired for the work he did in that role.
Ted Cruz- At just 44 years of age, Cruz is among the youngest of the candidates. The Canadian-born Cruz has served as the US Senator fom Texas for the past 2 years.
Carly Fiorina – The only female candidate on the Republican side, Fiorina has a background in business, having served as the CEO of Hewlett-Packard.
Jim Gilmore – Gilmore served as the Governor of Virginia from 1998-2002, and was also a Presidential Candidate in the 2008 election.
Lindsey Graham – A long standing US Senator from South Carolina, Graham has held the position since 2003.
Mike Huckabee – Served as the Governor of Arkansas from 1996-2007, and was another of this group of candidates who ran for President back in 2008.
Bobby Jindal – Another of the younger candidates in this group, Jindal has plenty of political experience, having served as the Governor of Louisiana from 2008-present day.
John Kasich – The 63-year old has served as the Governor of Ohio since 2011.
George Pataki – Pataki has had a long career in politics, and is perhaps best known for his time as the Governor of New York from 1995-2006.
Rand Paul – A Republican candidate, but on who also stated that he has libertarian leanings. Paul currently serves as the US Senator from Kentucky.
Rick Perry – This is not the first Presidential run for the Governor of Texas (2000-2015), as he also ran in 2012.
Marco Rubio – Whilst also on the young side, the 44-year old Rubio is not lacking in experiences, and has served as the US Senator from Florida since 2011.
Rick Santorum – The former US Senator from Pennsylvania (1995-2007) is making his second Presidential run, having been a candidate in the 2012 election.
Donald Trump – The billionaire businessman has dabbled in the Presidential race a couple of times in the past, but looks set to stick around a little longer this time.
